Chelsea squeaks past Palmeiras in late-drama Quarter-Final

Chelsea booked a semifinal spot with a 2–1 defeat of Palmeiras in the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, clinched by a late own goal by Palmeiras’ keeper, a tight contest decided in the dying minutes.

Chelsea struck first in the 16th minute: Cole Palmer danced past defenders and finished elegantly, giving the Blues an early lead. Palmeiras regrouped after halftime: teenage star Estêvão, who will join Chelsea after this tournament, leveled the match with a brilliant strike that gave them hope in the 53rd minute.

The match was in the balance with both teams trying to score a winner until the 83rd minute: an in-swinging cross from Malo Gusto caused chaos in the box and Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton inadvertently turned the ball in, scoring an own goal that snatched victory for Chelsea.

Despite Palmeiras pressing and creating chances in the final stretch, Chelsea’s defense held firm, and young debutant Andrey Santos impressed in midfield, displaying calm and control under pressure.
