The Philadelphia Union has transferred midfielder Daniel Gazdag to Columbus Crew in exchange for a guaranteed $4 million in cash. The club may also receive up to an additional $500,000 based on performance-related incentives.
Gazdag departs as the Union’s all-time leading scorer, with 59 goals and 31 assists across 125 appearances. He joined Philadelphia in May 2021 from Budapest Honved FC and played five seasons with the club, becoming a central figure in both regular season and playoff campaigns.

“Daniel’s contributions to the club have been invaluable,” said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. “He’s been an integral part of our success, and this move, while difficult, creates flexibility for both the club and the player.” On the international stage, Gazdag has represented Hungary across multiple age levels and has earned 29 total caps, scoring four goals for the senior national team since his debut in 2019.

This move marks one of the first major deals under MLS’s newly implemented cash-for-player rule, introduced in January 2025. The policy allows clubs to use unlimited out-of-pocket funds in trades, offering more freedom in how teams build their rosters. Philadelphia Union’s $4 million haul from Columbus Crew in exchange for Daniel Gazdag gives the club significant financial flexibility. Whether they use it to bolster their attack or finally invest in reinforcing the backline remains to be seen.
